Luz Rivas is an electrical engineer, current California State Assembly member, and STEM advocate who founded a non-profit, DIY (Do it Yourself) Girls, to help girls pursue careers and education in STEM. She was raised by a single working class mother who worked multiple jobs to make ends meet after immigrating to the United States. A turning point in her life happened in the 5th grade when her teacher encouraged her to learn about computers and science — which sparked Luz’s interest in STEM where she then went on to be accepted to and graduate from both MIT and Harvard University.
In the State Assembly, Luz was distinguished by her leadership and advocacy on issues like the climate, environmental justice, infrastructure, and promoting STEM education — resulting in her ascension to the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources within her first few years in office.
Now, she is running to keep California’s 29th Congressional District (which is an open seat) blue.
