314 Action Fund Endorses Dr. Annie Andrews for U.S. Senate, as a Guardian of Public Health

June 18, 2025

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 314 Action Fund today announced the endorsement of Dr. Annie Andrews for U.S. Senate in South Carolina. With her U.S. Senate campaign, Dr. Andrews is a Guardian of Public Health candidate, answering the call to serve as 314 Action works to elect 100 new doctors in office by 2030.

“At a time when public health is under relentless attack, South Carolinians need a senator who will stand up for them—and that’s Dr. Annie Andrews,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action Fund. “Now more than ever, we need to elect doctors who understand the importance of keeping science in Washington. She has the grit to run a tough race and the compassion to serve as an experienced pediatrician who has cared for children in emergencies. In the Senate, Dr. Andrews will always fight to improve the lives of South Carolinians—unlike Senator Lindsey Graham, who is willing to strip 1.3 million individuals of their health insurance. We’re proud to endorse Dr. Andrews for U.S. Senate and look forward to supporting her campaign.”

“These unprecedented attacks on our health care are exactly why I’m running for Senate. South Carolina deserves better from their elected officials and it’s time for Lindsey Graham to go,” said Dr. Annie Andrews. “As a pediatrician, I know firsthand what working families need to keep their children safe and healthy. I’m proud to be endorsed by 314 Action, an organization that has been on the frontlines in the fight to keep Republicans from gutting life-saving programs, and I look forward to working together.”

Dr. Annie Andrews has spent her career serving South Carolina families as a pediatrician. She’s seen how career politicians’ votes harm the very people they’re supposed to protect—from the price-gouging of life-saving medication, gun violence, and a broken economy, among others issues. She’ll always fight for every family to have the chance to raise their kids in safety and with dignity, with access to affordable health care, quality public schools, and economic security.

Through Guardians of Public Health, 314 Action is working to elect 100 new doctors, up and down the ballot and across the nation by 2030, raising and spending over $25 million in the effort.

314 Action Fund is the only national organization working to elect scientists and physicians who are Democrats across all levels of government—from the Senate down to local school boards. The organization is powered by a grassroots community of over six million people supporting scientists, doctors, and STEM professionals who will use science and facts to address our most pressing issues like climate change and health care.

In an announcement late today, RFK Jr. announced he’s appointing eight new members to the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel. Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action released the following statement in response:

“RFK Jr. will go down as the most dangerous Health Secretary in American history. With no CDC Director in place, and eight new vaccine critics selected to advance his discredited conspiracy theories — how America responds to outbreaks, pandemics, and preventable deaths are now in the hands of a small group of “experts” who are loyal to him. This was never about “radical transparency”, and it is a complete betrayal of the promise he made to leave this critical advisory panel untouched.

“We are calling on Senator Bill Cassidy to hold a hearing to investigate why all 17 members were fired and hastily replaced. The American people deserve to know what criteria was used to appoint these new members.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Earlier today, the White House released a statement defending their Big Bad Budget Bill, riddled with a series of cherry-picked ‘facts’ that deny the reality that hundreds of hospitals will close and tens of millions of Americans will lose health insurance if the Republican budget passes.

In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:

“This statement from the White House is the equivalent of chasing Joni Ernst through a cemetery. It’s a dead end,” said President Shaughnessy Naughton. “The majority of Americans oppose cuts to Medicaid because the reality is, people will die if this budget passes. You don’t have to be a doctor to recognize the deadly consequences of taking health care away from people who need it to survive.“

Here are the facts:

FACT: At least 742 rural hospitals are at risk of closing if Medicaid is cut.
What will happen to people in rural communities who have a heart attack or stroke and their nearest hospital is gone? They will die.

FACT: 60% of seniors in nursing homes rely on Medicaid.
Where will they live to access life-saving treatment and support? There is no plan B for seniors who rely on Medicaid to pay for long-term care. They will die.

FACT: 12 million low-income Americans with disabilities rely on Medicaid to be able to afford life-saving medication.
How will they pay for medication that keeps them alive? They won’t. People who lose Medicaid are less likely to fill prescriptions and between 4% and 22% more likely to die.

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — President of 314 Action Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement calling on Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) to respond to comments made by Senator Joni Ernst at a recent town hall, saying “we all are going to die”, in response to planned cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.

“Senator Joni Ernst said the quiet part out loud: if you’re on Medicaid, Republicans don’t care if you die under their plan. The people in Iowa’s First Congressional District deserve Representative Miller-Meeks to answer for the callous response from their Senator.

“Is this the GOP’s plan for health care? Why did she vote to strip health care away from over 130,000 Iowans? Senator Ernst made clear she’s ready to sign their lives away when the Republican budget heads to the Senate for a vote. It’s a death sentence and Rep. Miller-Meeks must answer for it.”

“Trump is cancelling research funding like he’s back on an episode of The Apprentice”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, 314 Action announced a new texting campaign, following Trump’s threats to cancel all federal funding to Harvard. The text campaign issued a “public health alert” to Boston and Cambridge area residents who’ve been hurt by Trump’s attacks, urging them to submit their story about how DOGE cuts have impacted them to 314 Actions’ digital tip line, ‘Chroniclers of Pain: Voices from the Frontline of a Public Health Crisis’.

“Trump is cancelling research funding like he’s back on an episode of The Apprentice. This dangerous temper tantrum will have real world consequences—it will kill Americans,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “These funding cuts are going to put life-saving research into new treatments for cancer, Alzheimer’s, and infectious diseases in a complete chokehold. Trump doesn’t care about the millions who will be impacted—or those who are already hurt by his funding freeze.”

New polling from Navigator Research released this week shows that cuts to disease research funding is a top concern among a list of current issues facing the country, with 65 percent saying they are “worried” about research into cures for diseases being cut.

314 Action’s text urges constituents to submit their story to the organization’s tip line

Naughton continued, “We’re shining a spotlight on the stories that Trump and his cronies want to sweep under the rug. Our tip line will uncover the real human cost of these reckless cuts—from patients denied life-saving care to researchers forced to abandon critical breakthroughs.”

The new text campaign is part of 314 Action’s ongoing seven-figure advocacy work to hold the Trump administration and top health officials accountable

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — On Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 100th day as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, released the following statement:

“Today marks RFK Jr.’s 100th day as Health and Human Services Secretary — and what a dumpster fire it has been. Since day one, RFK Jr. has peddled vaccine fairy tales, claimed people with autism “will never go on a date” and dived headfirst into a river of raw sewage. He’s transformed our nation’s health agencies into a conspiracy theory playground and watched with a grin as Republicans gutted the health budget to hand tax breaks to billionaires.

“314 Action’s mission has never been more urgent. The real boogie man behind America’s full-blown public health crisis is not fluoride or food coloring — it’s RFK Jr. and his allies dead set on dismantling life-saving health care programs and trust in science. That’s why we are focused on recruiting and electing doctors, scientists, nurses, researchers — leaders who understand what it really means to make Americans healthy again.”

Since his nomination, 314 Action has been a leader in holding RFK Jr. accountable and continues the work through an ongoing seven-figure accountability campaign against him and the Trump administration. This week, 314 Action released a digital ad and new digital tip line to hear from those impacted by RFK Jr.’s public health care cuts.

“The Trump administration has essentially declared war on science”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)  — Today, 314 Action held a virtual press conference vowing to make the 2026 midterms a referendum on Republicans’ plan to gut health care for millions following today’s vote on the budget in the House. Congressional Republicans approved the largest cuts to Medicare and Medicaid by a one-vote margin.

Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, was joined by Governor Josh Green (HI), Senator John Hickenlooper (CO), the former Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Medicaid Program during Trump’s first term Dr. Andrey Ostrovsky, and health care leaders.

Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action
“We are turning 2026 into a referendum on what happened today, and we know exactly who’s responsible. At 314 Action, we’ve identified 28 House Republicans who voted to rip away health care from working families and we’re going after every single one of them, because this isn’t just politics. This is personal.”

Governor Dr. Josh Green (HI)
“Certainly much of America, those rural hospitals, are going to be deprived of oxygen, finances. They are not going to be able to stay open if these public health cuts go forward. We are going to see outbreaks of preventable disease. We’re going to see extra cost, and frankly, it’s really, it’s really a terrible moment in history if we allow this Congress and this administration to cut so deeply.”

U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper (CO)
“The Trump administration has essentially declared war on science. They’re targeting the funding for life saving medical research…They’ve drastically without any plan, without any rhyme or reason, they’ve given science in America a sucker punch in the gut.”

Dr. Kristin Lyerly, Board Chair for The Committee to Protect Health Care and Wisconsin-based OB-GY
“Since 2005, more than 150 rural hospitals have closed, and currently—and this is a big number—nearly 750 rural hospitals across the country are at risk of closing in the near future. That’s nearly half of all rural hospitals. Most of these rural hospitals are already operating at a deficit. If I’m being completely honest, I don’t know how our rural hospitals will weather this storm, or what will happen to the people who live in those communities.”

Minnesota State Senator Matt Klein
“I know that $500 billion in cuts to Medicare and $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid impacts the health of every single American. Medicaid is the difference between life and death for my patients and for millions of Americans, it’s care for our patients in nursing facilities. It’s how rural hospitals keep the doors open and the lights on.”

Dr. Andrey Ostrovsky MD, former chief medical officer of the U.S. Medicaid program
“A lot of people that are not directly on Medicaid right now don’t appreciate how impactful Medicaid is on their lives, even if you have never been touched by Medicaid directly. Medicaid ends up making up about a third of every state’s budget. If even 10% of that goes away, that is then a compromise between funding Medicaid or schools or roads or other infrastructure.”
