STATEMENT: 314 Action Vows to Make House Republicans Pay for Slashing Health Care from 17 Million Americans

July 3, 2025
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, House Republicans voted to pass the largest cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act in American history, slashing health care from 17 million Americans. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Following a late-night scheme to slash health care from 17 million Americans, 218 House Republicans passed Trump’s mega spending bill. Last night, Mike Johnson dragged his “pro-life” brigade onto the House floor and held them for ransom for over 24 hours until they voted to approve the largest and most devastating cuts to health care in American history.
“This is a back-door raid of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to pay off Donald Trump’s donors, adds trillions to the national deficit and funds permanent tax giveaways for millionaires and billionaires. It erases any gains made by the ACA and increases the number of uninsured Americans to the highest levels in over a decade. This isn’t fiscal responsibility, it’s moral bankruptcy. When Americans die because they can’t afford health care, have to travel further in an emergency and wait longer for life-saving care, their blood will be on the hands of every House Republican who voted for this bill.
“This is a grave and sad day for America. Millions will be forced to make impossible decisions because of what their Representatives in this Congress did today. But make no mistake — 314 Action stands ready to roll up our sleeves and work harder than ever to elect leaders who will restore and protect health care. 314 Action Fund is already working with 25 candidates running for Congress in 2026 and has committed to raising and spending more than $20 million dollars to make sure Republicans pay a steep political price for this. This fight is not over — it’s only just beginning.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, Senate Republicans voted to pass the ‘Big Bad Budget Bill,’ with a tie-breaking vote. Senator Lindsay Graham led the charge on the Senate floor to help broker the deal to strip health care from millions of Americans. In response 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“Senator Lindsay Graham just voted to cut one trillion dollars from Medicaid, leading the charge on the Senate floor to strike a deal that will strip coverage from nearly 17 million Americans. For more than 24 hours, Senator Graham was the ringleader, cheering on deeper and deeper cuts to Medicaid.
“This will be the defining issue leading into 2026. Voters have made it clear that they oppose cuts to Medicaid and they are looking for leaders who will protect health care, like Dr. Annie Andrews. As a pediatrician, Dr. Annie Andrews has spent her career treating children who rely on Medicaid, babies born prematurely, children with rare genetic conditions, or serious infections that result in hospitalization. 314 Action is ready to roll up our sleeves and work to elect Dr. Annie Andrews to the U.S. Senate.”

Senate Republicans Sign Death Notice for 17 Million Americans
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the “Big Bad Budget Bill,” which will cut one trillion dollars from Medicaid, stripping health care from millions of Americans. In response, 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement:
“With scissors and a grin, Republicans just signed a death notice for over 17 million Americans. They ignored warnings from advocates and put a target on the backs of their constituents: low-income families, disabled Americans, children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and veterans, among others who rely on Medicaid to survive. The passage of this bill will slam the door shut on over 300 rural hospitals, making it more difficult for Americans to receive care in an emergency. We are about to experience a public crisis never seen before.
“Spare us the ‘pro-life’ charade. Every Republican who backed this bill just voted to gut support for struggling families and hand billions to the ultra-rich. This isn’t governing—it’s cruelty dressed up as economics. They didn’t cut fraud or waste—they cut coverage from people, the most vulnerable Americans. They’ve ballooned the deficit to reward the same billionaires who bought them into power. This is a betrayal of working Americans, and every one of them has blood on their hands.
“Republicans have crossed a line and there’s no turning back now. This will be the defining issue of 2026 because Americans will suffer. A majority of voters have made clear in poll after poll that they oppose cuts to Medicaid. It’s never been more clear that voters want real leaders, in red states and blue states, who will protect health care. 314 Action is ready to roll up our sleeves and work harder than ever to elect doctors and scientists to office. This is a fight for our lives and it has only begun.”

In 2025, 314 Action Fund has endorsed 100 new scientists and doctors answering the call to run for local offices in 2025. We know that supporting scientists and doctors in local races ensures that the work on health care, education, and more is being done at every level.”
Naughton continued, “Our downballot candidates also represent an incredible pipeline of talent for future federal races. (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) —Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, released the following statement ahead of the Senate’s vote on the ‘‘Big Bad Budget Bill,’ which will cut one trillion dollars from Medicaid, stripping health care from millions: “If Senator Cassidy has any doubts about how he must vote on the budget bill, he should re-read his hippocratic oath. Stripping Medicaid coverage from over 1.6 million vulnerable Louisianians is a complete betrayal of his promise as a doctor. He’s already been fooled once into endangering the American people by voting to confirm RFK Jr. to HHS Secretary. The lives of millions depend on him not making the same mistake twice.
“When sick and poor Louisanans die because they can’t afford health insurance, their blood will be on Senator Cassidy’s hands. As the only doctor in the Senate, he knows that this bill isn’t about waste and fraud—it’s naked cruelty. Every major health care system in the state has sounded the alarm that this bill will devastate their communities and a report found that 33 rural hospitals in Louisiana are at risk of closing.
“Voters have made it clear that they oppose cuts to Medicaid and 314 Action will field candidates in races up and down the ballot to elect leaders who will protect health care.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action, released a statement following the Senate confirmation hearing of CDC Director nominee, Susan Monarez:
“Today’s Senate hearing confirms Susan Monarez was asleep at the wheel as acting CDC Director. If confirmed, she would just be a rubber-stamp for Trump and RFK Jr.’s relentless attacks on public health. Despite her lip service, she called herself an “independent thinker who follows evidence-based science,” yet refused to disavow RFK Jr.’s dangerous conspiracy theories.
“She claimed the ‘Big Bad Budget Bill’ won’t kick any Americans off their health insurance and regurgitated absurd talking points. We need a CDC director who will use facts and data to stand up to RFK Jr. and protect the American people — not a lapdog. The Senate must reject her nomination to keep RFK Jr. from enacting any more damage to public health.”
Since his nomination, 314 Action has been a leader in holding RFK Jr. accountable and continues the work through an ongoing seven-figure accountability campaign against him and the Trump administration. 314 Action also launched a petition demanding the MAHA Report be immediately removed and retracted from the White House website, which has been signed by a coalition of 100 elected officials, doctors, and STEM leaders.

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 314 Action Fund today endorsed Daniel Biss for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District.
“Mayor Daniel Biss has spent his career fighting for his community—as a local activist, a state legislator, and the Mayor of Evanston. He’s ready to head to Congress to continue to work for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action Fund. “He’s a proven leader, delivering results rooted in facts and data. As a former professor of mathematics, I can say the math isn’t mathing in Washington D.C. I’m proud to have 314 Action’s endorsement and look forward to working together.”

“Minnesotans are hurting right now, but Dr. Matt Klein is committed to public service and stands ready to lead Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action Fund. “As a State Senator, he has a long record of fighting for Minnesotans, both in the exam room and in the state house. We need more dedicated public servants like Dr. Klein who will work across the aisle to deliver for their constituents. We’re proud to endorse him for Congress.”
“I’m proud to be endorsed by 314 Action Fund as we push back against the nonstop attacks on health care and our communities,” said State Senator Dr. Matt Klein. “In the Minnesota House, I stood with my district to protect reproductive freedoms, control the cost of rising medications, and support our rural communities. Just as I did on the local level and as a doctor, I am trained to use evidence to solve problems that benefit every Minnesotan. I’m excited to work alongside 314 Action as we take on this fight together.”
Dr. Matt Klein has served in Minnesota’s State Senate, representing Senate District 53, since 2017, also working at Mayo Clinic in internal medicine. While in office, he’s passed laws protecting Minnesotans from financial fraud and predatory lending. Dr. Klein also controlled the rising cost of medications by regulating the pharmaceutical industry and affirmed the rights of Minnesotans to make their own choices about reproductive health.
Through Guardians of Public Health, 314 Action Fund is working to elect 100 new doctors, up and down the ballot and across the nation by 2030, raising and spending over $25 million in the effort.
