NEW AD: “IT’S TIME TO FIRE MUSK” — 314 ACTION BLASTS ELON MUSK FOR ATTACKING VETERANS, INCLUDING SENATOR MARK KELLY

April 2, 2025

Latest digital ad will run in crucial battleground states around VA hospitals

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 314 Action today released a new digital ad slamming Elon Musk for repeatedly disrespecting veterans at every opportunity—including Senator Mark Kelly. Following Musk’s DOGE orders to fire thousands upon thousands of veterans, he went after Senator Kelly, calling him a “traitor”.

“Elon Musk seems to think this is all just a joke—that he can say and do whatever he wants without consequences,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Calling Navy veteran Senator Mark Kelly a ‘traitor,’ while delighting in firing thousands of honorable U.S. veterans from continuing their service, is a disgrace. Meanwhile, in between Nazi salutes and chainsaws, he’s enriching himself and his companies off government contracts. It’s beyond time to fire Musk.

Musk” will run in battleground states with VA hospitals, including: Arizona, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, and Ohio—reaching 21 medical centers. The digital ad is part of 314 Action’s ongoing seven-figure advocacy work to hold Trump’s dangerous anti-science Administration accountable. This builds upon the organization’s recent digital ad campaign demanding 12 of the most vulnerable House Republicans to stand up to Elon Musk’s attacks on public health

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement on Judge Susan Crawford’s victory in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election, effectively holding onto the liberal majority:

“Congratulations to Judge Susan Crawford on her successful election to Wisconsin’s Supreme Court. Now more than ever, we need fair, pro-science justices—and that’s Judge Susan Crawford.

“Though not a scientist herself, Judge Crawford has spent her career fighting for the beliefs that 314 Action stands for. Her track record includes defending reproductive rights, protecting our environment, and working for the people of Wisconsin—not Donald Trump or Elon Musk’s agenda.

“For years, it’s been said that ‘as goes Wisconsin, goes the nation.’ We can only hope Americans take after Wisconsinites and continue to fight back against Trump and Musk’s anti-science agenda by electing pro-science leaders at every level. And we will be in every state, supporting champions like Judge Susan Crawford.”

314 Action Fund supported Judge Susan Crawford’s campaign, helping to raise over $100K as Elon Musk poured over $20M into the race.

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) 314 Action President Shaughnessy Naughton released the following statement on Florida’s Sixth Congressional District race:

“There’s no denying that Josh Weil ran a strong campaign. As a math teacher in a public school, he used data and facts to ultimately put Republicans on defense in a district that was previously Red by 33 points. The margin between Josh and his opponent was closer than ever. This is a victory in itself.

“Josh’s campaign showed us what we already know to be true. Working families are turning their back on Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the GOP members rubber-stamping their anti-science policies. It’s clear that voters know they can trust candidates with STEM backgrounds and count on them to stand up to the Trump administration.

“We are ready to continue our work in Florida—and beyond—to help elect STEM candidates who will fight back against the relentless attacks on science.”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Last week, on Pi Day, 314 Action announced their federal targets for the 2026 cycle, focusing on 28 of the most vulnerable Republicans across the nation. These representatives have used their time in office to advance Trump’s anti-science agenda, blatantly disregarding the facts and data.

This is the latest in 314 Action’s electoral work combatting the GOP’s relentless attacks on science. Earlier this month, the organization launched Guardians of Public Health—a campaign dedicated to electing 100 new doctors by 2030, from the State House to the White House.

The Democratic science-advocacy group 314 Action is launching a $30 million effort targeting 28 House Republicans — an escalation in the war in Washington over science.

“Normally, Pi Day is a celebration of our STEM elected officials and the work they’re doing to promote science in our legislation. But this year, due to the unrelenting attacks on science, we’re going on the offensive,” the group’s president, Shaughnessy Naughton, said.

The size of the planned campaign is a significant increase from the roughly $20 million the group spent targeting House Republicans in 2024. 314 Action works to elect Democrats with science and medical backgrounds up and down the ballot.

The campaign comes at a fraught time for science-related spending in government. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency are targeting grants to universities and the National Institutes of Health that fund new medical research. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, is raising doubts about the efficacy of vaccines.

In response, 314 Action is stepping up its efforts to urge scientists to run for Congress. Earlier this month, the group launched a recruitment effort aimed at electing 100 new doctors to office by the year 2030.

In the new campaign, 314 Action is zeroing in on many of the usual suspects: Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) and Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), the three Republicans in seats Kamala Harris won in 2024, and swing-seat Reps. David Valadao (R-Calif.), Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.), Young Kim (R-Calif.), Gabe Evans (R-Colo.), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), Zach Nunn (R-Iowa), Tom Barrett (R-Mich.), Tom Kean Jr. (R-N.J.) Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.), Rob Bresnahan (R-Pa.) and Jen Kiggans (R-Va.).

But with the House so evenly divided between the two parties — and with battleground districts rapidly disappearing — the target list stretches into some reach districts for Democrats as well. Included on the list are Republicans in fairly red seats like Rep. Jeff Hurd in Colorado, Ryan Zinke in Montana and Anna Paulina Luna in Florida.

“Science is resistance…Now more than ever, we need a new class of leaders”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Today, on Pi Day, 314 Action announced their federal electoral targets for 2026. The organization is focusing on 28 vulnerable Republicans, all of whom are blatantly ignoring the facts and data to implement Donald Trump’s anti-science agenda.

“Normally, Pi Day is a celebration of our STEM elected officials and the work they’re doing to promote science in our legislation. But this year, due to the unrelenting attacks on science, we’re going on the offensive,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “Science is resistanceThese 28 anti-science Republican members are rubber-stamps for Trump’s dangerous—and scientifically unfounded—orders. From cuts to Medicaid and public health, to the assaults on free speech and university funding, now more than ever, we need a new class of leaders who will protect every person in their district, using facts and data to make change.

“We know that scientists are up to the task. And this Pi Day, we are recommiting ourselves to work harder than ever to elect STEM candidates and deliver a pro-science House Democratic majority.”

314 Action has had incredible success across the nation recruiting, training, and electing scientists to offices up and down the ballot. In 2024, 314 Action helped elect 248 Democratic scientists into offices across the country—including electing 7 new members of Congress (three of which were Red to Blue flips), reelecting 3 U.S. Senators and 13 House members, and 225 candidates in local down-ballot elections. Earlier this month, the organization launched Guardians of Public Health—a campaign dedicated to electing 100 new doctors by 2030, from the State House to the White House.

Since 2018, we have played a pivotal role in flipping the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, electing eleven Democratic scientists to federal office, as well as in helping over 400 statewide, state legislative, and municipal candidates win their races.

The Hill

March 13, 2025

The digital campaign from progressive advocacy group 314 Action asks Americans living in GOP-held swing districts to call their U.S. representative over potential health cuts.

The ads ask Americans to call their representatives and demand they push back against the Trump administration’s grant funding freeze and mass firings of public health employees.

The Trump administration has ordered sweeping funding cuts to federal public health agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and launched a mass firing of federal workers as part of cost-saving efforts.

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire leading the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has led the charge.

One recent round of firings resulted in more than a thousand NIH workers being let go from the agency.

The ad campaign, seen first by The Hill, targets districts represented by GOP Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Iowa); David Schweikert (Ariz); Don Bacon (N.E.); Jen Kiggans (Va);  Juan Ciscomani (Ariz); Tom Barrett (Mich.); Thomas Kean Jr. (N.J.); Ryan Mackenzie (Pa); Gabe Evans (Colo); John James (Mich.); Scott Perry (Pa); and Mike Lawler (N.Y.).

The ads are backed by a six-figure buy, according to the group.

Each ad features text asking readers to tell their representative to “stand up to Elon Musk” and “defend public health research at NIH and CDC.” A photograph of Musk taken at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month where he appeared onstage wielding a chainsaw over his head is located next to the text.

The scientific and medical community have decried the moves from the Trump administration warning that funding and staff cuts have halted crucial research and place national and global health at risk.

“Elon Musk’s vicious attacks on our health care system are short-sighted—and House Republicans know this,” Shaughnessy Naughton, 314 Action’s president, said in a statement. “Draconian, untargeted cuts to funding to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health will unnecessarily put millions of vulnerable Americans’ lives at risk.”

The campaign is set to run for the next two weeks.

“It’s crucial that these Republicans grow a backbone and start protecting our country”

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — 314 Action today launched a new digital campaign targeting 12 of the most vulnerable Republicans in the U.S. House, urging constituents in each district to call their representatives and demand that they stand up to Elon Musk’s attacks on public health, NIH funding, including funding for cancer research, and life saving initiatives. The digital ad campaign comes ahead of the potential government shutdown.

The digital ad campaign will target 12 Republicans: Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01); Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-01); Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02); Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA-02); Rep. Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06); Rep. Tom Barett (MI-07); Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (NJ-07); Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (PA-07); Rep. Gabe Evans (CO-08); Rep. John James (MI-10); Rep. Scott Perry (PA-10); and Rep. Mike Lawler (NY-17).

“Elon Musk’s vicious attacks on our health care system are short-sighted—and House Republicans know this,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, 314 Action President. “Draconian, untargeted cuts to funding to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health will unnecessarily put millions of vulnerable Americans’ lives at risk.”

Naughton, a chemist and former researcher continued, “Our elected officials’ jobs are to better the lives of their constituents—which is why we’re calling on people to call their representatives and tell them to stand up to Elon Musk and defend crucial public health research. We are committed to  fighting for the issues that matter most to the people. It’s crucial that these Republicans grow a backbone and start protecting our country.”

These digital ads are part of 314 Action’s ongoing seven-figure advocacy work to hold Trump’s dangerous anti-science Administration accountable. The organization is focusing on the most vulnerable House Republicans and districts where STEM candidates are actively being recruited. The pressure campaign will run for two weeks, through the potential government shut down.

314 Action has been leading the fight against Trump’s anti-science agenda. The organization was at the forefront of the fight opposing RFK Jr.’s HHS nomination, launching a series of digital adstexting campaigns, and press conferences. 314 Action is the only national organization working to recruit and elect Democrats with backgrounds in science and medicine across all levels of government—from the U.S. Senate down to local school boards.
