314 Action Fund Endorses Hawaii LG Dr. Josh Green for Governor; Releases New Poll Showing Green as the Clear Democratic Frontrunner

Green Has Support of 51% of HI-GOV Democratic Primary Voters in a Three-Candidate Race

November 18, 2021

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund announced its endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Dr. Josh Green in the race to become the next governor of Hawaii. A physician and experienced lawmaker, Green has served both Hawaii families as a local doctor for decades and in both chambers of the Hawaii legislature. Green was elected lieutenant governor of Hawaii in 2018 and has continued to serve as an emergency room doctor throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alongside its endorsement, 314 Action Fund released new polling (memo available here) showing that Green is the far-and-away frontrunner in the HI-GOV Democratic primary. The poll, which was conducted by Public Policy Polling on behalf of 314 Action Fund and polled Democratic primary voters across Hawaii, shows that among the declared Democratic candidates for governor, 51% of voters would support Green as their top choice — 37% more than the next most popular candidate. If the Democratic primary narrowed to a two-candidate race, 58% of voters say they would vote for Green.

Additionally, 70% of respondents approve of Green’s job performance, with 71% approving of his performance specifically regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. This high approval rating is in stark contrast to the favorability ratings of the other announced or rumored candidates, neither of whom have a net favorability over -3%. The margin of error of this poll is +/- 4%, and a polling memo can be viewed here.

“From treating COVID-19 patients in the emergency room to fighting for pro-science legislation that benefits the people of Hawaii, Lieutenant Governor Josh Green has proven that he is more than just an dedicated physician and seasoned policymaker — he’s an exemplary community leader who combines the two roles flawlessly,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “Josh is prepared to lead Hawaii during this critical time when real scientific leadership is needed more urgently than ever, and we’re proud to stand with him in his fight.”

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of an organization that supports science, facts, and reason in public office,” said Lieutenant Governor Josh Green. “From the beginning of the COVID pandemic, science and facts have helped us save thousands of lives, reassure the public or issue warnings when necessary, and protect the people we love, and I will keep working every day to keep us safe and informed with accurate information based on science until the pandemic is under control.”

Last month, 314 Action launched a $10 million, cycle-long advocacy campaign focused on engaging voters on critical science issues — including climate change, health care, and the pandemic response — and holding anti-science public figures accountable. Additionally, 314 Action has engaged its six million grassroots member base to push for pro-science legislation at the federal level and across the states.

In 2022, 314 Action Fund will aim to spend $50 million to elect scientists across all levels of government, with initial targets of seven U.S. Senate races, forty U.S. House races, and twenty-one statewide races. In 2020, the organization spent $25 million on behalf of its endorsed candidates and raised a total of $5 million in grassroots donations for scientists running for office.

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund announced its endorsement of doctor and Navy veteran Dr. Kermit Jones in the race for California’s 4th congressional district. Jones is running to take on Republican Tom McClintock — who has voted against expanding access to affordable health care, called masks “useless” on the House floor, and pushes a dangerous, anti-science agenda — next November.

“Dr. Kermit Jones’ deep knowledge of science and medicine are needed in office — especially as we address the long-term challenges facing our country, from access to affordable health care, to addressing the climate crisis, to rebuilding the path to the middle class and beyond,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “Our six million-member community of pro-science voters, activists, and donors look forward to helping Dr. Jones beat Tom McClintock next November.”

“I’m honored to be endorsed by 314 Action Fund,” said Dr. Kermit Jones. “Far too many of our lawmakers in Washington, including my Republican opponent Congressman McClintock, spread disinformation and put politics and ideology ahead of doing what’s right. In Congress, I’ll lead the same way that I practice medicine and served in the Navy — by following the science, listening to people, and always putting their interests first.”

Last month, 314 Action launched a $10 million, cycle-long advocacy campaign focused on engaging voters on critical science issues — including climate change, health care, and the pandemic response — and holding anti-science public figures accountable. ABOUT DR. KERMIT JONES:

A doctor, Navy veteran, and attorney, Dr. Kermit Jones learned the values of hard work, responsibility and community while growing up and working on the family farm. As he helped his dad tend the farm, he watched his mother work as a home health nurse, never wavering from her commitment to take care of the people in her community. It was there that Kermit knew he wanted to become a doctor. Kermit was attending law and medical school at Duke University when our country was attacked on 9/11. Soon after, Kermit joined the Navy and deployed alongside Marines. After returning from Iraq, Kermit used the GI Bill to study public policy at Columbia University and was selected as a White House fellow in the Obama administration. Afterwards he worked as a regulatory and patent attorney at a Washington, D.C. law firm, ensuring that new prescription drugs were safe and effective. He settled in Northern California with his wife and family and began working as a primary care physician.

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund announced its endorsement of nuclear engineer and Ph.D Chris Jones in the Arkansas gubernatorial race. Jones would be the first Black governor of Arkansas, a historic opportunity for a state that has been the site of some of the most important moments in America’s continued fight for civil rights.

“As someone who has spent years finding innovative solutions to solve problems facing his state, Chris Jones’ STEM background makes him a perfect candidate to lead Arkansas,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “As a multi-generational Arkansan, a preacher and a scientist, Chris can reach one of the largest blocks of Arkansans — nonvoters — and mobilize them to win next November.”

“I am excited and humbled to receive this endorsement from 314 Action. From using lasers to measure the muddyness of water as a high school student, to calibrating the gas flow system of a plasma rocket as an intern at NASA, to creating magnetic diagnostic tools for a levitated dipole as a graduate student at MIT, to teaching ninth grade advanced algebra, it has always been clear to me that STEM is a cornerstone of my life.” said Dr. Chris Jones. “314 Action understands that many of our most intractable societal problems require an understanding of STEM to even begin to be solved. Their sustained work of putting science at the policy making table is making a tangible difference. With this support from 314 Action, I look forward to bringing my passion for and understanding of STEM to the Arkansas policy making table so that every part of Arkansas can achieve the future we deserve.”

ABOUT CHRIS JONES:

Dr. Chris Jones grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas and always has a deep love for science. A son of two preachers, Chris was also raised with a strong sense of faith. He attended Morehouse College on a full NASA Scholarship, for physics and math, then went on to study at MIT earning a masters degree in Nuclear Engineering, a masters degree in Technology & Policy, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning. After becoming ordained as a minister, Chris returned home to Arkansas with his wife, an emergency room physician, and their three daughters, and led the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. Through this work, he spread STEAM education throughout the state and has seen firsthand how disparities within Arkansas have gotten worse, not better. He believes there is much room for growth, including improving public education opportunities in every community, strengthening infrastructure from roads to broadband access, protecting and securing our right to vote, and bridging the rural and urban divide. Chris has faith in Arkansas’s potential, and he’s running for governor to ensure every person in Arkansas has an opportunity to succeed.

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund announced its endorsement of State Representative Dr. Yadira Careveo in the race to represent Colorado’s recently drawn eighth congressional district. A pediatrician, Dr. Caraveo has served in the Colorado General Assembly since 2019, making pro-science policy issues the hallmark of her legislative work. CO-08 is a nearly forty-percent Hispanic district, and if elected, Dr. Caraveo would be the first Latina to represent Colorado in the U.S. House and the only physician in the Colorado delegation.

The race for CO-08, which has been deemed a “toss-up” by election analysts, is expected to be highly competitive. Had the district been drawn in time for the 2020 election, President Joe Biden would have carried the district by four percent.

“As vice chair of the Colorado House Health & Insurance Committee, Representative Dr. Yadira Caraveo has put her STEM training and background as a pediatrician to work for the people of Coloradans,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “From fighting for policies that ensure Coloradans have access to high-quality, affordable health care and paid family leave to passing legislation to make voting more accessible, Yadira has proven that she’s ready to lead the fight for evidence-based policies in the U.S. House.”

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of 314 Action. As a pediatrician, I’ve always tried to bring reason and science to the legislative process in the state house when it comes to issues like battling COVID. We need more of that in Congress, especially with so many anti-science, anti-vaccine, and anti-mask extremists in Colorado and in Washington,” said Dr. Yadira Caraveo, candidate for Congress in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District.

Last month, 314 Action launched a $10 million, cycle-long advocacy campaign focused on engaging voters on critical science issues — including climate change, health care, and the pandemic response — and holding anti-science public figures accountable. ABOUT STATE REPRESENTATIVE DR. YADIRA CARAVEO:

Dr. Yadira Caraveo is a pediatrician, state representative, and daughter of immigrants. Dr. Caraveo’s parents raised her and her siblings on her father’s construction worker’s salary in Adams County. In the legislature, Dr. Caraveo has delivered for working Coloradans by standing up to the biggest corporate bullies and entrenched special interests.

Now, Dr. Caraveo is running for Congress to stand up for hard-working families she sees falling through the cracks. Dr. Caraveo would be the first Latina to represent Colorado in Congress and the only physician in Colorado’s congressional delegation. Find out more at www.caraveoforcongress.com.

PHILADELPHIA — Today, the Washington Free Beacon reported that Republican Mehmet Oz — a television personality who has used his medical degree to hawk anti-science products for financial gain, push conspiracy theories, and claim at the start of the pandemic that two to three percent of American children dying of COVID-19 could be a “trade-off” to get kids back into schools — is planning on running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

“Much like Dr. Oz’s pseudoscience and medical advice, his political aspirations are more fitting for the Emerald City than the U.S. Senate,” said Alexandra De Luca, communications director of 314 Action.

In contrast, 314 Action Fund has endorsed Dr. Val Arkoosh, the chair of Pennsylvania’s third largest county, in the Democratic primary in this race. If elected, Arkoosh would be the first woman in Pennsylvania elected to a statewide federal office and the first woman physician elected to the U.S. Senate. CNN has already deemed this U.S. Senate seat the most likely to change party hands in 2022, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball currently considers it the only true “toss-up” Senate seat on next year’s map.

In 2022, 314 Action Fund will aim to spend $50 million to elect scientists across all levels of government, with initial targets of seven U.S. Senate races, forty U.S. House races, and twenty-one statewide races. “314 Action and its network of more than six million pro-science advocates congratulates all of our endorsed STEM leaders who won across the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action. “Virginians can rest assured that these candidates and incumbents will put facts first when crafting policy in Richmond and bring an evidence-based approach to legislating on important issues including the ongoing pandemic.”
