(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) — Last night, Congress ended the longest government shutdown in American history, without extending the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. In response, 314 Action Executive Director Erik Polyak issued the following statement:

“After 43 days, the Republican Health Care shutdown has finally come to an end—but the fight to restore health care is just beginning. As Republicans return from their eight-week taxpayer funded vacation, millions of Americans can’t pay for health insurance next year when premiums double or triple. With no scheduled date for the vote to extend ACA tax credits and House Republicans refusing to commit to a timeline, the fight over health care continues.

“It is clear now that health care is the battleground for midterms—and while Republicans continue to play politics with peoples’ lives, 314 Action vows to lead the fight to protect them. As the nation’s only organization dedicated to electing doctors and scientists who understand how to fix this health care crisis, we will spend the next year recruiting, training and electing leaders who have triaged patients in emergency departments, sat in the exam rooms and actually understand the stakes of this fight. Now more than ever, their leadership and expertise are desperately needed in Congress to fix our broken health care system and ensure no American goes without health care.”

314 Action is the only national organization working to recruit, train and elect Democratic scientists across all levels of government—from the Senate down to local school boards. The organization is powered by a grassroots community of over six million people supporting scientists and health care professionals who will use science and facts to address the most urgent issues facing our generation.
