PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA — New reporting from the Washington Post and CNN revealed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s health department threatened multiple television stations with criminal charges for exercising their First Amendment right by airing an ad calling for the repeal of Florida’s strict abortion ban. The pro abortion rights ad call on voters to support a ballot measure that would overturn the six-week abortion ban signed into law by Florida Governor DeSantis.
“Ron DeSantis just proved what we already knew, that he is a MAGA extremist who will stop at nothing to control women’s bodies,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, Founder and President of 314 Action.
“When Florida Governor DeSantis signed a draconian six-week abortion ban into law, he endangered the lives of millions of women and put their health care at risk. The Governor’s health department’s threats to bring criminal charges against TV stations that air abortion rights ads is completely unacceptable and an abuse of power. Voters have a right to learn more about Amendment 4, which will overturn the GOP’s draconian abortion ban and help save the lives of women for generations to come.”
“At 314 Action, we will continue to work up and down the ballot to elect STEM candidates to office, who know that abortion care saves lives and they will always fight to protect women’s reproductive freedoms, including the right to choose.”
