When Congresswoman Lauren Underwood flipped IL-14 blue in 2018, she made history as the first woman, person of color, and millennial to represent her district and became the youngest Black woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After Underwood’s stunning upset against a four-term incumbent in 2018 and her victory amidst a competitive 2020 challenge, national Republicans have made IL-14 a top target for 2022.

Underwood is a registered nurse with hands-on experience in America’s health care industry. Lauren holds a M.S. in Nursing and a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Michigan. Lauren worked as a research nurse at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and in the Obama Administration, she was appointed to serve in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a senior adviser. In the latter role, she helped implement the Affordable Care Act and helped communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterror threats, and public health emergencies.
