Medical Professional and La Mesa City Councilmember Running to Represent District Where She Was Raised

March 10, 2021

PHILADELPHIA — Today, 314 Action Fund endorsed Dr. Akilah Weber in the race to represent California’s seventy-ninth state assembly district. Dr. Weber is seeking to succeed her mother, Shirley Weber, who recently vacated the seat to become California’s Secretary of State.

Dr. Weber was raised in the San Diego’s Oak Park neighborhood, right in the heart of the legislative district she is running to represent. A board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Weber founded and currently directs the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Division of Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Weber also works as an assistant clinical professor at the University of California San Diego.

Since 2018, Dr. Weber has served as a member of the La Mesa City Council, championing the implementation of La Mesa’s Climate Action Plan and keeping science at the forefront of the city’s COVID-19 pandemic response. She has volunteered as the science coordinator for Links to STEM, a children’s program for underrepresented communities in STEM fields.

“Throughout her career, Dr. Akilah Weber has fought to promote science-first policies and to connect underserved youth with STEM training that will change their lives,” said Shaughnessy Naughton, President of 314 Action. “In the California State Assembly, Akilah will continue to serve as a champion of facts and evidence-based solutions, especially wfrom combating the climate crisis to expanding access to affordable health care.”

314 Action Fund is powered by a grassroots community of nearly six million people working to elect scientists, doctors, and STEM professionals who will use science and facts to address our most pressing issues like climate change and health care. In 2018 and 2020, we played a pivotal role in flipping the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, electing eleven Democratic scientists to federal office, as well as over 100 to key legislative districts. In 2021 and 2022, 314 Action Fund will continue working to elect science leaders and defeat climate deniers in Congress and legislatures across the country.
